On Saturday, August 24th, 2025, Surfrider Foundation Broward County Chapter dedicated Flamingo Gardens' Everglades Outdoor Classroom, now officially recognized as an Ocean Friendly Garden!
The classroom was celebrated for:
- Conserving water, energy, and native plants
- Building healthy, permeable soil to soak up rain
- Retaining water to reduce runoff and pollution
By creating landscapes that work with nature, they are protecting our waterways and ocean while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards!
During the dedication, we learned about vital local pollinators and the native plants that support them in the outdoor classroom. We then released Monarch butterflies and Florida’s state butterfly, the Zebra Longwing, that were reared by the Flamingo Gardens team.
This event was not only commemorative but impactful too! Our Surfrider Broward volunteers worked side by side with Flamingo Garden's Ecoteers to remove invasive species, preventing the use of water polluting herbicides.
Our volunteers also had the opportunity to ride the tram and explore the 60 acres of lush gardens!

Together, we’re proving that even one garden can make a big difference.
