Plastic’s still the go-to bag for many grocery shoppers

Broward County Surfrider Chapter members asked the chapter to look into banning bags in Broward County but  did you know that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, said that during the 2010 legislative session lawmakers did not enact any legislation regarding regulation of retail bags and nothing is proposed this year. The legislature also did not repeal section 403.7033 of the Florida Statutes, which prohibits any local government, local governmental agency, or state government agency from enacting any rule restricting or taxing disposable plastic bags.

Lionfish Smash

What is a Lionfish Smash, you ask? Good question! Lionfish derbies are fishing competitions where teams work to collect as many lionfish as they can within a dawn-to-dusk period using a variety of capture methods while SCUBA diving, free diving or snorkeling. Removing lionfish from the reef is beneficial as it allows native species to grow unmolested and restores balance to the delicate coral ecosystem found in our coastal waters.

SMASH – October 29, 2011

Tournament Format is as follows:

  • People must compete in 2 man teams with multiple teams allowed on a boat.
  • A representative from each team must sign in either by boat or by car at the rickenbacker marina the day of the tournament from 7-9 am.
  • The tournament area is open and people can gather lionfish wherever they want.
  • All fish must be on the dock at the rickenbacker marina before 4pm.
  • Competitors may utilize scuba if they want to.
  • SHORE DIVING is allowed but competitors without a boat should consider going out with our sponsor Aquatic Explorers who will be offering a discount the day of the event and they know where the big Lions are hiding.
  •

     Prize Winnings

  • Largest Lionfish $500
  • Smallest Lionfish $200
  • Most Lionfish 2 Spearguns

Thank you 2011 Sea Turtle Hatchling Rescue Volunteers! Enjoy …

Thank you 2011 Sea Turtle Hatchling Rescue Volunteers!

A season recap video to thank all of the sea turtle hatchling rescue volunteers who gave their hearts in the summer of 2011 to document a record breaking and astonishing 14,000 disoriented sea turtle hatchlings in Broward County Florida caused by illegal lighting and over 25,000 since founded in 2007! 1 in every 3 hatchlings goes to the lights instead of the sea.

Many more were missed. The instinct to go towards light is so strong that the hatchlings pour onto city streets to their death, when the ocean is only a few feet from the nest where they hatched.

You can help by sending emails to the cities of Hillsboro, Deerfield, Pompano, Ft. Lauderdale and Hollywood to tell them to enforce current local lighting laws, Florida State Statue 379 and the Federal Endangered Species Act.

This is your wakeup call to help!
